The short version
- We collect information when you contact us, register for a course, or become a member.
- We use it only to run BSCRA programs and to communicate with you about them.
- We don't sell, rent, or trade personal information, and we don't use advertising trackers.
- Radio is public. Anything said on the air, including callsigns, can be heard by anyone.
- Young people are welcome. Parents register children and stay in control of their information.
- Questions or requests: [email protected].
Who we are
Blackskye Community Radio, Inc., doing business as Blackskye Community Radio Association ("BSCRA," "we," "us"), is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit based in Waynesboro, Pennsylvania. This policy covers the bscra-pa.org website and the online tools it hosts, including course registration, the Net Directory, net control signup, and member ID card verification.
What we collect
When you contact us
The contact form asks for your name, email address, and message, and optionally your radio callsign and area of interest. Your message is delivered to us by email.
When you register for a course
We collect your name, email address, phone number, mailing address, and whether you're a BSCRA member. We use this to hold your seat, manage the waitlist, and send your confirmation, calendar invitation, and reminder. Only BSCRA administrators can see registration details.
Participants under 18 must be registered by a parent or guardian, using the parent or guardian's own contact information.
When you become a member
Membership sign-up and payment are handled by our payment processor, Zeffy, with card processing by Stripe. We never receive or store your card or bank details. Zeffy shares your name and contact information with us so we can keep our membership roster, which includes your name, callsigns, email address, mailing address, and membership dates.
Member ID cards
If we issue you a member ID card, we keep your photo and card number with your membership record. Scanning the QR code on a card opens a public verification page that shows your photo, name, card number, printed role, callsigns, and whether the card is currently valid. It never shows your address or email. We may record when a card is verified.
Volunteers and net control operators
Volunteers who sign in to our operator tools have an account with a username, name, callsign, and role. When you sign up to run a net, your first name and callsign appear on our public net schedule.
Information collected automatically
Like most websites, our web host and our network provider, Cloudflare, automatically log basic technical information when you visit, such as your IP address, browser type, the pages requested, and the time of the request. These logs are used for security and to keep the site running.
Radio is public
GMRS and amateur radio transmissions are not private. Anything said on our repeaters or nets can be heard by anyone with a radio, and FCC callsigns and their license details are public records. In addition:
- Our live repeater audio feed streams repeater traffic on the website as it happens.
- We may record nets and post the recordings on our website.
- Net logs may include the callsigns and names of stations that check in.
If a posted recording includes something you'd like removed, contact us and we'll review your request.
How we use your information
- To respond to your messages and questions.
- To run courses: registrations, waitlists, confirmations, reminders, and attendance.
- To maintain our membership roster, issue ID cards, and send membership-related communications.
- To schedule and operate radio nets.
- To keep our website and systems secure.
- To meet legal, tax, and nonprofit recordkeeping requirements.
Third-party content and links
Our fonts and images are hosted on our own server. The one exception is embedded video: when you play it, your browser connects to the video service, which receives your IP address and may apply its own privacy policy:
- YouTube, when you play an embedded video.
Our site also links to outside websites, such as the FCC, RepeaterBook, and other radio clubs listed in the Net Directory. We're not responsible for their privacy practices.
How long we keep it
We keep personal information only as long as we need it for the purpose it was collected, or as required for legal, tax, or nonprofit records. Contact messages and course registration records are deleted when they're no longer needed. Membership records are kept while you're a member and for a reasonable period afterward for our records.
Security
Our website uses encrypted (HTTPS) connections, administrative tools require a password, and sensitive details like registrant addresses and member records are limited to the BSCRA officers who need them. No system is perfectly secure, but we take reasonable steps to protect your information.
Your choices
- See, correct, or delete your information. Email us and we'll respond within a reasonable time. We may need to keep certain records, such as donation receipts, where the law requires.
- Cancel a course registration anytime using the cancellation link in your confirmation or reminder email.
- Stop non-essential emails by replying and asking us to remove you.
Children and young operators
We welcome young people who are interested in radio, including children under 13, and we work with their parents and guardians to keep their information safe.
- Information comes from parents, not children. A parent or guardian registers anyone under 18 for a course and provides the contact information. We ask only for the child's name, and we use it only to run the course.
- Children shouldn't use our online forms themselves. If we learn that a child under 13 sent us personal information directly, such as through the contact form, we'll delete it and, where we can, reach out to a parent instead.
- We don't publish children's personal details. We won't post a minor's full name, photo, or contact information on our website or social media without a parent or guardian's permission.
- On the air. Young operators may take part in nets under a licensed family member's callsign, as GMRS rules allow. Like all radio traffic, what they say can be heard publicly and may appear in net recordings or logs. A parent or guardian can ask us to take down a posted recording that includes their child, and we’ll honor reasonable requests.
- Parents are in control. A parent or guardian can ask to review, correct, or delete their child's information at any time by contacting us.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as our programs change. The effective date at the top of this page shows when it was last revised.
